Dear Juno, Or Any Other Pregnant Teenager in the Same Situation...
I fully respect the mature decisions you made throughout your pregnancy; and the fact that you gave you’re a child to a loving home regardless of it being run by a single mother is very honorable. But what happened to the condom? Did I miss something? Was it invisible? Obviously the sex was premeditated, so did you take birth control pills? No? Okay. Nevertheless, we all make our mistakes and learn from them, and I feel you did the best anyone in your situation could.
Though I personally disagree with having unprotected sex as a teenager, or really any sex as a teenager, I feel if I was in your position I would have done the same thing. It’s my body therefor what I do with it is my choice, I don’t believe extreme conservatives nor our government should dictate what I can and cannot do with it. Thus meaning I support prochoice and Roe v. Wade (right to privacy) because I feel it is NECESSARY to keep abortion legal. I in no way enjoy the idea of abortion and I wish we didn’t need it but we do, whether it is for victims of rape, endangering the life or mother and or child, or because it was an accidental pregnancy and a women isn’t ready to bring a child into the world. Women should not have to resort to back alley abortions, and as much as I wish abortions could almost be nonexistent it’s not going to happen. Life is precious, and deserves equal protection (Amendment XIV) but overall I support the legalization of abortion.
Sex should occur when someone has fully matured, can make adult decisions, and understands how sex can truly affect your life/lifestyle; not through boredom or recklessness. On an ending point, Bill Clinton once said (and Mr. Geib has frequently repeated) let’s make abortion "safe, legal and rare."
